Cambridge 9 Test 4 (IELTS Writing) - Task 1 & Task 2

Câu hỏi : The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line chart illustrates the amount of energy that has been consumed since 1980 and predicted until 2030 in the USA.
Overall, 1980-2010 witnessed a few fluctuations in consuming energy. However, until 2030, it is estimated that the usage of coal, petrol, and oil would increase whilst the figures for other types maybe decrease or stabilize.

After some fluctuations between 1980 and 1995, the consumption of petrol and oil went up significantly. Particularly, in 1995, approximately 32.5 quadrillion units (units) of this was consumed and this figure continued rising to present before projected to reach a pick at 47.5 units in 2030. This trend is akin to the consumption of coal. In 1995, around 22.5 units of coal was used that nearly stayed static until 2005; however, this number slightly improved to almost 25 units in 2015 and is expected to climb to 30 units in 2030. Besides, the usage of natural gas underwent the longest period of fluctuation from 1980-2015; however, it is predictable that there would have stability in using this fuel with roughly 22.5 units until 2030.

Meanwhile, after witnessing an unpredictable trend from 1980 to 2005, using solar/wind and hydropower stayed static at 4 and 2.5 units, sequentially. These figures are projected not to change till 2030. Also, the figure for nuclear energy increased slightly from 1980-2010 and is estimated to stay constant at about 6 units until 2030. (233 words)

Câu hỏi : Every year several languages die out. Some people think that this is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.

Mở Bài

There is a profound concern that some languages are endangered or even extinct every year and some people opine that this disappearance is no use worrying because it helps life become easier. While admitting the complication of having a large number of languages, I do not completely subscribe to the aforementioned opinion.

Thân Bài 1

On the one hand, the fewer languages we have, the more benefits we could get in terms of communication and international trade. Indeed, evidence suggests that multilingual communication has made many people have trouble understanding others in virtue of language barriers. By way of illustrationwhen it comes to the experience of tourists when contacting indigenous people, it would be much easier for them if they used an official language as English. Besides, this also facilitates smooth international trade across the worldIn essence, the conflicts related to misunderstanding provisions or international commercial terms are liable to decrease once there are fewer languages.

Thân Bài 2

However, in light of consequences, once some tongues die out, we must be concerned about this matter. Initially, there is an intimate connection between cultural preservation and the survival of a local tongue. Languages help pass cultural assets down from generation to generation encompassing the course of literature, arts, and history. Also, should a native tongue vanish, we can be denied access to invaluable knowledge that is widely influential in many fields, especially medicine. According to a recent study, in case of the extinction of some local tongues belonging to tribes in remote areas of the Amazonian rain forest, natural therapies from the flora and fauna are likely to completely disappear.

Kết Bài

In conclusion, it seems to me that we could feel at ease once fewer languages exist; however, this could make us suffer the unforeseen consequences. (291 words)
